WikiJava:Creating new Categories

From WikiJava

Jump to: navigation, search

There are several ways to generate a category.

The recommended method is to generate a Category by inserting an article into it. See the description.

Generating a Category through a new Article

The recommended way is to create an article that belongs to the category:

  1. decide if your article will be a tutorial or an example, and click on the sidebar on the relative link
  2. choose a name for the article, (see the guides for choosing example page names or tutorial page names for a guideline on how to choose the name for the article)
  3. Compile all the information for your article (read the help page in case you need)
  4. For creating the new category find the 'categories' area. It will contain a dropdown list with the preconfigured categories. Below the dropdown find the the "Suggest new categories" text box.
  5. Type in the 'Suggest new categories' any category name for your article, separated with Commas.
  6. Complete your article
  7. save the article
  8. you will be brought to your newly created article

You can notice at the bottom of the page the list of categories you selected (plus an automatically added one, which will be either [:category:example] or [:category:tutorial]), note that the categories you suggested are effectively listed as categories for the article. The category names are links that you can click on.

The categoryies have now been created successfully. The names you selected will be also automatically candidated for an eventual promotion to the default categories list.

Creating the Category Page

Categories may have an article page describing them. We call this page Category Page. You visit the category page when you click on the blue link at the bottom of the page in the section category.

Ideally the page for the category should contain an introduction to the category, explaining what kind of articles and which contents will be found in the category. Plus a short general introduction to the argument (for example with links to manuals on the topic).

You will notice at the bottom of the article page the category names. They are shown either in blue or in red.

  • A blue link means that the category page has been created already and you can click on the link to see it.
  • A red link means that the category page doesn't exist yet, and you can click on the link to create it.

If you click on the red link you will see the edit page, and there you can insert your wikitext with the description.

For a guide to wikitext refert to the Mediawiki user help page. For example:
